Everyone has something that is worth selling online. If you look around your house, it is possible that you have hundreds, or even thousands of dollars’ worth of stuff to sell on eBay. Instead of keeping those unused items, why not make some money on them? There are many online shopping sites you can use, and still many more up and coming.
Start by “buying.” I know that you are excited to sell but don’t dive headfirst into selling. Test out the sites by being a buyer first. If you have ever bought something on one of the sites, then you are ten steps closer to selling. If you have never bought anything then it is important to start by creating a user ID to shop. Much like you would never buy a restaurant if you haven’t eaten there, don’t start selling on eBay without having shopped on eBay.
What can I sell on eBay? eBay is one of the easiest sites to begin. If you have ever bought anything in a store, eBay will probably have it. With 20 million listings, you can find anything from your favorite shampoo to the missing piece of your holiday display. Do a search on eBay to see what they offer: go to eBay.com and in the search engine, type in something that you need to buy at the store and then press [Enter].
What does it cost to sell on eBay? eBay has listing fees (much like if you listed something in the newspaper to sell) and final value fees if the item sells. On average you will spend 15-25% of your profit on fees. There are also listing fees that will help make your item stand out, but they are not necessary.
The selling rules have changed. If it has been a while since you have been on eBay, it is important to be aware that the rules have changed for eBay, and the customers (buyers) expect the best. So if it is broken or missing a piece, be very careful about listing it. When you do list that less-than-perfect item, be sure to disclose it. Not only can your customer be unhappy, but eBay may have some concerns as well. Remember a customer is also a customer of eBay, and they want to retain customers too!
Be the expert on your item. If you are going to sell the item, research it. Be the expert. Anticipate all questions that the customer will have and include it in your listing.
Look over your item well. Make sure that there are no missing buttons. Plug it in and make sure it still lights up. Make sure the zipper works. Hold it up to the light to look for holes or worn spots. As a common courtesy, dust it off or wash it. Even if you think that there is nothing wrong with it, take a second look.
Treat your customers well. Remember that if you sell on eBay, this will be your business. If someone buys from you, they will be your customer. Treat them well and they will treat you well. Only list something if you are certain you want to sell it or if you have it in stock. May sure to put your listing price at the lowest possible amount you will take, or consider having a secret “reserve price (fee applies),” that someone has to meet before they can buy it. Be sure to answer questions or you could lose a customer.
Get going! You are certainly going to make more money on it if you sell it rather than continue to let it age in the corner. You are selling to people that often will love your item as much as you did. Best of luck!
